New Year, New Paint: How Interior Colors Can Improve Your Mood

Many start the new year with a New Year’s resolution – setting new goals, trying new things, and aiming to be a better version of themselves. What most don’t include in their New Year’s resolution is to have an interior paint makeover of their house. But it’s an idea worth pursuing.

This is because colors can affect your mood. New paint colors in your rooms and common areas can generate positivity at the start of the year.  How many times have you experienced being more relaxed working or hanging out in some places than in others?

It’s what they call Color Psychology. It refers to using colors to boost and improve mood, emotion, and perception. When the colors and ambiance of a place give you positive emotions, you go through the day energized, confident, and happy.

These are samples of how we perceive colors:

  • If you want a warmer tone, you can use colors such as yellow, orange, or red.

  • For cooler hues, you might want to consider using blue, green, or purple.

  • Try using white, gray, or cream for a more peaceful ambiance for your room.

  • Black can be depressing if used as the whole paint but can add sophistication if used as an accent or in combination with other colors.

Colors can also trick your eyes. For example, white looks more spacious than darker colors so it can make your space look bigger.

You may also perceive red as an appetite booster because it is a stimulating color that increases heart rate and blood flow, and therefore, metabolism. This is the reason most popular restaurants use red as their main color.

Violet reflects luxury and royalty.

Paint Color Applications That Are Not Recommended

On the other hand, these are some of the misapplications of colors in certain places:

  • Avoid using red in bedrooms or places where you want to relax because it tends to increase excitement and keep you awake.

  • Bright yellow is not a good match for nursery rooms for it overwhelms and irritates your baby.

  • Dark shades of blue may trigger sadness and depression.

  • Too much white, or painting your whole space white, may make you feel anxious.

Nevertheless, this is still subjective and varies based on your preference. How others perceive colors might be different for you. But in any case, color will still affect your mood and emotions.

Using Paint Colors to Rejuvenate Your Home

  1. Try creating a mood board. Experiment with different color combinations and see what you can feel while looking at them.

  2. Check the source of natural light in your home and rooms because it will affect how the colors will appear.

  3. Consider the function of the room before choosing the color of your paint. For example, warm colors are widely used in living rooms, home offices, and kitchens to create excitement, energy, creativity, and optimism. Cool colors are perfect for bedrooms or work offices, which need to be more relaxing, tranquil, and calming.

Your environment can affect how you do things. Picking the right hues for your interior painting will play an important factor in achieving your goals this 2025. Colors can improve your emotions. It can inspire you and give you the energy you need. It will set your mood up to do better.
